Cherokee Plants: Their Uses -- A 400 Year History by Paul. B. Hamel & Mary U. Chiltoskey
This is a PDF scan of a book from my own library and is available nowhere else online!
This chapbook from the mid-1970s is a compilation of both the wisdom of the elders in the authors' family, as well as meticulous research spanning back several centuries into the recorded uses of herbs and medicine used by the Cherokee. This book is regionally specific to the Southeastern United States and names many rare and often overlooked plants that grow in this area and nowhere else, such as the Paw Paw and the Honey Locust trees. Unlike many modern books on this same topic, this book does no omit unconventional or spiritual remedies, meaning that all information on benefits of plants now considered poisonous is intact. There are many recipes for ways to combine individual remedies, and this comprehensive list of herbs even includes their other traditional uses, such as in weaving baskets and in ceremonies. Vague instructions are provided for traditional ceremonies, as many of the authors' sources weren't comfortable sharing it all. All known common and scientific names for plants are included, as well as cross-references to those plants which are similar and those which work toward a common goal. Back is THOROUGHLY indexed.
